Saint Bernard Puppies – Breed History

No one knows for sure how long this Molossoid breed has been around for, but in 1707 there were drawings, paintings and written records of Saint Bernard puppies by monks at the Great St. Bernard Pass. Their name originated from a difficult pass, St. Bernard Pass, in the Western Alps. Local dogs in the area slowly acquired other names, such as “Saint Dogs” and “Noble Steeds”.  Saint Bernard Puppies are believed to be ancestors of Swiss Mountain Dogs, which were popular on large farms in the Swiss Alps. They would guard and herd farmers ample supply of livestock, assist in the farmers hunting trips and act as family watchdogs.
